With this Newsletter, we would like to offer you an insight of the events of the past and coming weeks. Much has been achieved in the areas of teaching, research and corporate programs. Of particular interest this month: The “3rd Night of Knowledge” taking place on the 7th of November and the Assessment Centre for the 3rd cohort of the MBA Service Management 2010 on the 27th of November.

B.A. Service Management: Awarded twice! B.A.-Programm

The part-time B.A. Program for “young talents” in companies, who want to gain their first academic degree, has been accredited by the FIBAA (commencing May 2010). The course is certified with international standards of an academic business foundation education specifying on Service Management. Four criterias were evaluated exceptionally well, especially the curriculum’s practical feasibility. In September, the quality of the propgram was also certified by the Association for Services Management International (AFSMI) a professional association of the service trade. The evaulation committee was complemented by Chapter representatives from Spain and Italy.

SPECTARIS scholarships: Sponsorship of Service-Leadership

As of 2010 two scholarships will be granted by SPECTARIS for the MBA and B.A. Program. SPECTARIS is the German industry association („Verband der Hightech-Industrie“) for the high-tech medium-sized business sector and representative body in the areas of medical technology, optical technologies and analytical, biological, laboratory, and ophthalmic devices. The scholarships will be awarded to employees of SPECTARIS member companies, which fulfil ISS admission criteria and who compose the best essay related to the topic of “Service”. The selection committee is composed of representatives from ISS and SPECTARIS.

“3rd Night of Knowledge” on the 7th of November in Hamburg„Von Schlangen in der Servicewüste - Eine Expedition in die Dienstleistungswissenschaft“

The ISS is participating in the popular academic event “Night of Knowledge” on the 7th of November in Hamburg – during which more than 650 presentations will be held. Our presentations will focus on “Service Wasteland – Expedition into Service Research” and “The Slanted Towers of Bologna? Prospects and Side-Effects of the New World of Higher Education”. These topics will be presented among others by the former managing director of the “Hamburg Chamber of Skilled Crafts and Small Businesses”, Dr. Hogeforster and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Karpen, legal scholar and lecturer at ISS. Visitors of the event will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in the discussion. Between presentations, our Service-Lounge will offer our guests the opportunity to meet members of the ISS community and become acquainted with the uniqueness of the ISS mission its programs.

Prof. Dr. Böhmann visiting professor at Karlstad UniversityCTF

By invitation of Karlstad University, Sweden, Prof. Dr. Tilo Böhmann will be “visiting professor” in 2010. He will spend a month as teacher and researcher at the Center For Service Research (CTF, www.ctf.kau.se) with Prof. Dr. Bo Edvardsson. The CTF at Karlstad University is one of the world's leading research centers focusing on service management and value creation through service. Established in 1986, CTF now has 50 researchers and research students who are collaboratively involved in business administration, working life science, sociology and psychology.

Press News

On the 10th of October, Christiane Langrock a reporter from the newspaper “Süddeutsche”, wrote an article about the impressions she gathered during her interviews held with the participants of the first Assessment Centre of the MBA class 2010. Numerous other articles mention context with the ISS, such as articles in the “Handelsblatt” or the Austrian “Die Presse.

Website Re-Design in cooperation with Promerit

In close collaboration with Promerit, one of the most innovative HR-consultancy firms in Europe, a Re-Design of the german ISS homepage is now online. Emphasis was made on: professional layout, specific target-group addressing, current listings of events with ISS involvement and improving internet search engine rankings. An english version will follow soon.


ISS at the „maintain Europe 2009“ in Munich

The convention „Leitmesse für industrielle Instandhaltung“ in October, was an opportunity for the business School to introduce the maintenance management modules of the offered course plan. Just a few days later the first applications were received! Additionally, the ISS Corporate programs generated many new business contacts.
